Hamish Blake and Andy Lee formed their comedy duo in 2003, having first met at the University of Melbourne in 2001. Their careers began in radio, hosting shows on community radio station SYN FM, including ‘Cruise Control’ in 2002 and ‘The Buzz’ in 2003. Their early success led them to Fox FM, where they hosted ‘Almost Tuesday’ and then ‘Almost Midday,’ which gained national syndication. This groundwork laid the foundation for their significant impact on Australian media. They also ventured into television early on, developing the sketch show ‘Radio Karate’ for Channel 31 in 2003 and a variety program for the Seven Network in 2004, titled ‘Hamish and Andy.’ These initial years were crucial in developing their comedic style and audience connection.
From 2006 to 2013, Hamish & Andy hosted a popular weekday drive time radio show, which became the highest-rated radio series in Australian history, attracting approximately two million daily listeners. During this period, they undertook various ventures, including domestic and international caravan tours, a Bass Strait sailboat trip, and broadcasts from locations such as Afghanistan, Beijing, Japan, India, and the United States. Their radio success led to two compilation albums, ‘Unessential Listening’ (2008) and ‘Celebrating 50 Glorious Years’ (2010), both of which won ARIA Awards for Best Comedy Release. In parallel, their television presence grew with correspondent roles on ‘Rove’ from 2007 to 2009 and the development of their ‘Hamish & Andy’s Gap Year’ series on the Nine Network, starting in 2011, which earned multiple Logie Awards. After concluding their daily radio show in 2010, they continued with a weekly show, ‘Business Brunch’/’Happy Hour.’
In 2015, they returned to a weekly drive time slot on the Hit Network, announcing in 2016 that 2017 would be their final year on radio to concentrate on television projects. Their final radio episodes garnered approximately 30 million podcast downloads. Since 2018, they have continued their work in a weekly podcast-only format, ‘Hamish & Andy,’ which has produced over 240 episodes across seven seasons. In 2020, they launched a spin-off podcast, ‘The Remembering Project,’ revisiting past radio segments. Their television work post-radio includes ‘True Story with Hamish & Andy’ (seasons 1 and 2 in 2017 and 2018) and ‘Hamish and Andy’s “Perfect” Holiday’ (2019), maintaining their visibility and connection with their audience.
