About

Hideki Matsuyama was born on February 25, 1992, in Matsuyama, Ehime, Japan. He was introduced to golf at the age of four by his father. His amateur career included significant achievements such as winning the Asian Amateur Championship in 2010 and 2011. These victories allowed him to compete as an amateur in the Masters Tournament, where he was the leading amateur and won the Silver Cup in 2011. He also earned gold medals at the 2011 World University Games in both individual and team events. Matsuyama reached the number one position in the World Amateur Golf Ranking in 2012, highlighting his early potential in the sport.

Matsuyama turned professional in April 2013, quickly making an impact on the Japan Golf Tour by winning the Tsuruya Open shortly after. He continued his success on the Japan Golf Tour, securing additional victories at the Diamond Cup Golf, Fujisankei Classic, and Casio World Open in 2013. His performance during this period made him the first rookie to lead the Japan Tour’s money list. In 2014, he earned his first PGA Tour win at the Memorial Tournament, defeating Kevin Na in a playoff. This victory elevated his Official World Golf Ranking and marked a significant step in his career on the global stage. He also continued to win on the Japan Golf Tour, taking the Dunlop Phoenix Tournament in 2014.

A key milestone in Matsuyama’s professional career was his win at the 2021 Masters Tournament, making him the first Japanese player and first Asian-born player to win a men’s major golf championship. He has a total of 11 PGA Tour wins, making him the most successful Japanese member of the PGA Tour in history. His achievements also include two World Golf Championships titles: the WGC-HSBC Champions in 2016 and the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational in 2017. In 2024, he won the Genesis Invitational and the FedEx St. Jude Championship, and earned a bronze medal at the Olympic Games. He started 2025 by winning The Sentry, setting a new PGA Tour scoring record in relation to par.
