Hugh Green

Hugh Donell Green was born on July 27, 1959, in Natchez, Mississippi. He attended North Natchez High School before embarking on a standout college football career at the University of Pittsburgh from 1977 to 1980. During his time at Pittsburgh, Green achieved significant recognition, being named a three-time consensus All-American from 1978 to 1980, and a second-team All-American as a freshman in 1977. He also earned four-time All-East selection honors. Green’s college tenure saw the Pittsburgh Panthers achieve a 39–8–1 record, including wins in three bowl games. His collegiate performance culminated in 1980 when he received the Lombardi Award, Maxwell Award, and Walter Camp Award. He also finished second in the Heisman Trophy voting, which was the highest rank a defensive specialist had attained until 1997. His Jersey No. 99 was retired by the University of Pittsburgh.

Green was selected as the seventh overall pick in the first round of the 1981 NFL Draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he played until 1985. During his time with the Buccaneers, he was recognized for his exceptional defensive abilities, earning Pro Bowl selections in 1982 and 1983, and All-Pro honors in the same years. In the middle of the 1985 season, Green was traded to the Miami Dolphins. While with the Dolphins, he continued to contribute as a key defensive player. His career with the Dolphins lasted for six seasons before his retirement. Green amassed a total of 37.3 sacks and played 136 games over his professional career. After his football career, Green returned to Natchez, Mississippi, and operated a farm.
