Widely regarded as one of the greatest goalkeepers in history, Iker Casillas is a retired footballer who spent most of his career at Real Madrid. One of only a handful of players to achieve more than 1000 professional career matches, he holds the record for the most clean sheets for the Spain national team and in the UEFA Champions League. Nicknamed “San Iker” (Saint Iker) for his talent of producing the most spectacular saves, his outstanding ability to stop shots, his quick reactions and athleticism has established Casillas as a goalkeeping legend. He was selected for the UEFA Team of the Year six years in a row from 2007 to 2012 and placed fourth overall in the Ballon d’Or in 2008.
Born in Madrid, Casillas began playing for the Real Madrid youth team. After earning promotion to the main team he made history in 1999 when he became the youngest ever goalkeeper to play in the Champions League and to win the title. Before long he was the first choice goalkeeper at the club, helping the side win two La Liga titles and Champions Leagues in his first three seasons. During his time at Madrid he won every major club title, including three UEFA Champions Leagues, five La Liga titles and two UEFA Super Cups.
Casillas is the joint tenth-most capped footballer in history, and has the second most appearances for his national side after earning 167 international caps. In 2008 he led Spain to victory in the European Championship as captain, and two years later also led the country to their first World Cup win.
In 2020 the legendary goalkeeper hung up his boots and announced his retirement from the game, and was appointed as deputy to the Real Madrid Foundation CEO in December.
