Named to The Root 100 in 2022, Imani Barbarin has built one of the most influential voices in American disability activism. A writer, public speaker, and communications professional, she is known online as Crutches and Spice, a platform she launched in 2014 to write about her experiences as a disabled Black woman. Born with cerebral palsy in March 1990, she channels that lived perspective into work that reaches audiences across the web, print, and live stages.
Her digital organizing has repeatedly shaped national conversation. In 2018 she created #DisTheOscars to spotlight missing disability representation, followed #AbledsAreWeird in 2019, and launched #MyDisabledLifeIsWorthy in January 2021 in response to remarks by former CDC director Rochelle Walensky on COVID-19 deaths among disabled people. Joining TikTok in 2020, she mixed comedy with education, amassing 370,000 followers there and 140,000 on Twitter by February 2022.
Beyond social media, Barbarin hosted the five-episode podcast Vote for Access in 2020, headlined the Midwest Bisexual Lesbian Gay Transgender Asexual College Conference in October 2022, and appeared on The Assignment with Audie Cornish in 2023. A graduate of Eastern University, she works as a communications manager for a disability legal office in Philadelphia, speaks at universities, and writes for online newspapers and magazines while advocating for accurate disability representation in media and entertainment.
