Isaac Heeney was born on May 5, 1996, in Maitland, New South Wales. Growing up in the Hunter Region, Heeney displayed early athletic promise across various sports. At age 7, he excelled in soccer, scoring 68 goals in 12 games, and later demonstrated talent in cricket with a batting average of 216. Heeney also participated in rugby league, scoring 5 tries in a school grand final victory. His junior Australian rules football career began with the Cardiff Hawks, leading him to join the QBE Sydney Swans Academy at the age of 12. Heeney later moved to Sydney, completing his final school year at Waverley College while playing for the Swans’ reserves team in the NEAFL. He stated that without the Swans’ academy, he might have pursued rugby league, highlighting his early commitment to Australian rules football. Heeney continued to support the Swans, idolizing player Ryan O’Keefe.
Heeney was selected by the Sydney Swans in the 2014 AFL Draft. His drafting was significant, as the Melbourne Football Club initially bid the second overall pick for him, but the Swans matched it with their 18th pick due to existing rules, which subsequently led to changes in the draft system. He made his AFL debut for Sydney in Round 1 of the 2015 season against Essendon, kicking the match-winning goal in the final quarter. Following a strong start, he received an AFL Rising Star nomination in Round 3 of the 2015 season. Heeney demonstrated consistent performance, earning selection in the AFL Players’ Association’s 22Under22 team in 2017 and 2018. His career milestones include winning the 2018 AFL Mark of the Year award, and he received life membership with the Swans in 2022 after playing 150 games, becoming the first Academy graduate to achieve this distinction.
Throughout his career, Heeney has played various roles for the Swans, including midfield, forward line, and defense. The 2024 season marked a peak in his performance, where he averaged 25 disposals and nearly two goals per game in the midfield. He garnered 28 votes in the Brownlow Medal count and was recognized as Club Champion, Paul Kelly Player’s Player, and Paul Roos Best Player in Finals. In the 2024 Qualifying Final against GWS, Heeney executed an exceptional mark that was widely considered Mark of the Year, though he was ineligible for the official award due to it being a finals match. His mother publicly acknowledged GWS player Jack Buckley for ensuring Heeney’s safe landing during the mark, highlighting the sportsmanship in the league. Heeney has secured a three-time All-Australian selection in 2022, 2024, and 2025, and won the Bob Skilton Medal in 2024 and 2025, further solidifying his standing as a prominent AFL player.
