About

Ismael Marcelo Hernández Uscanga, born on January 23, 1990, in Cuautla, Morelos, Mexico, has established himself as a distinguished modern pentathlete. His athletic career spans over sixteen years, marked by consistent performance at national and international levels. Hernández’s initial exposure to competitive sports at age nine, observing activities at a Mexican army sports facility, ignited his ambition to become an Olympic athlete. Hernández also pursued higher education, graduating with a degree in economics from Tecnológico de Monterrey in 2015 and later completing an MBA at Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business.

Hernández began competing internationally in 2009. A notable early achievement was at the 2010 Central American and Caribbean Games, where he secured an individual silver medal and a team bronze medal in modern pentathlon. His career faced challenges, including a temporary ban from competition in 2011 due to a WADA doping test that showed clenbuterol, and a fractured arm in 2012 which prevented his participation in the London Olympics. Despite these setbacks, Hernández demonstrated resilience. In 2014, he earned two gold medals at the Central American and Caribbean Championships and, along with teammate Tamara Vega, won the 2nd World Cup Mixed Relays event. His qualification for the Rio 2016 Olympics came after winning a silver medal at the 2015 Toronto Pan American Games. Leading up to the Rio Olympics, he was ranked 16th globally, showcasing his consistent standing among the world’s elite.

The pinnacle of Hernández’s career came at the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics. Despite an initial 19th-place finish in the first event, he steadily improved, moving to 11th after swimming and 6th after the show jumping event. In the final combined event of running and shooting, he scored 626 points, culminating in an overall score of 1468 points, just four points behind the silver medalist. This performance earned him a bronze medal, marking Mexico’s first Olympic medal in modern pentathlon and the fifth for the Mexican Olympic Team at Rio 2016. In recognition of his achievements, Hernández was awarded the “Premio Nacional del Deporte” by the Mexican Secretariat of Public Education in September 2016. He currently resides in New York and is actively involved in the Latin community.
