J. Neilson is a highly respected American knife and sword expert with over twenty-five years of experience in bladesmithing. Born on November 8, 1969, in New Jersey, USA, Neilson’s journey into the world of edged weapons began early in his life. He honed his craft through experimentation and formal training, initially working in Towanda, Pennsylvania, under the guidance of mentor Keith. Neilson’s dedication and passion led him to establish his own workshop, the Woods Workshop, where he continues to create blades with exceptional skill and craftsmanship.
In 2004, Neilson achieved the prestigious status of Master Smith in the American Bladesmith Society (ABS), a distinction held by fewer than 120 individuals worldwide. His expertise and reputation in the field caught the attention of television producers, leading to his role as a judge on the hit reality TV series “Forged in Fire.” As a judge, Neilson meticulously evaluates the technical merits and durability of weapons forged by contestants, contributing to the show’s rigorous standards and educational content.
Beyond “Forged in Fire,” Neilson has also appeared on the spin-off series “Forged in Fire: Beat the Judge,” further solidifying his influence and expertise in the bladesmithing community. His departure from Season 3 of “Forged in Fire” due to hand surgery underscored his commitment to the craft and his eventual return in Season 4 reaffirmed his pivotal role on the show.
Outside of bladesmithing and television, Neilson finds fulfillment in his family life. He is married to Beckie Allen-Neilson, and together they have two children. Neilson’s journey from apprentice bladesmith to Master Smith and influential television personality reflects his unwavering dedication to the art of knife-making and his enduring impact on the bladesmithing community worldwide.
