About

J. Neilson began his professional journey in knifemaking around the age of 25, choosing the trade for its independence and the opportunity to work away from traditional employment structures. For 10 years prior to his television appearances, he dedicated himself to the craft, ultimately achieving the esteemed title of Master Smith from the American Bladesmith Society (ABS). His work during this period, characterized by clean and functional designs made with quality materials, established his reputation within the specialized knifemaking community.

In 2015, Neilson’s career took a significant turn when he was approached to serve as a judge on the History Channel’s competition series, “Forged in Fire.” Initially skeptical about the show’s longevity, he joined the panel, bringing his direct and honest critique style to a national viewership. This role quickly led to widespread recognition, with the show airing 252 episodes over 11 seasons. His involvement with “Forged in Fire” not only boosted his personal profile but also contributed to a broader resurgence in interest within the bladesmithing industry, influencing demand for custom blades and an increase in tool prices.

Following the conclusion of “Forged in Fire” and a personal tragedy in 2022, Neilson re-evaluated his priorities. He decided to focus on creating knives based on personal interest rather than commissioned orders, refunding a significant backlog of deposits to customers. This shift allowed him to return to the core passion for knifemaking that defined his early career, prioritizing personal fulfillment over the demands of a high-profile schedule, while continuing to engage with the craft under his own terms.
