Jack Ashton is a British actor who was launched into fame after landing the recurring role of the town vicar in BBC’s much praised period drama series Call the Midwife in 2012. Produced by Neal Street Productions, the brainchild of illustrious director and producer Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Skyfall, 1917), the series has spanned 9 seasons and dozens of episodes since its inception. In the show Ashton plays Tom Hereward, the Reverend of Poplar, London who works closely with the nuns of Nonnatus House. It’s a role he was exceedingly glad to take on after what he describes as a slump in his career, making it all the more special for Ashton to have received the opportunity to perform on-screen for millions of British and international viewers.
Also in 2012, Ashton featured as a police officer in the popular British crime drama series Endeavour, a show following the famous fictional detective Endeavour Morse over in his early years as a police constable. After leaving Call the Midwife in its seventh season, Ashton has embarked on other interesting projects, such as a role in a touring stage production of Strangers on a Train and an as yet unreleased American movie in which he plays a GI prisoner of war.
Absorbed by the acting world from a young age, Ashton earned his first major role in a London production of Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire alongside future superstar Rachel Weisz. Since then he’s remained committed to his ambitions and is at last reaping the rewards of his efforts, having generated a stellar reputation (both in the UK and America) through his breakthrough role in Call the Midwife.
