About

Born Andrés Arturo García Menéndez on April 12, 1956, in Havana, Cuba, Andy Garcia’s family relocated to Miami Beach when he was two years old due to political changes in Cuba. The family eventually established a successful fragrance company. Garcia initially pursued a career in professional baseball, but a bout of mononucleosis and hepatitis during his senior year of high school led him to explore acting. He studied drama at Florida International University before moving to Hollywood to pursue his acting ambitions.

Garcia’s early career included a role as a gang member in the first episode of the TV series “Hill Street Blues” (1981). His portrayal of a cocaine kingpin in “8 Million Ways to Die” (1986) captured the attention of director Brian De Palma, leading to his breakthrough role as Agent George Stone in “The Untouchables” (1987). This was followed by significant roles in films like Ridley Scott’s “Black Rain” (1989) and “Internal Affairs” (1990). A pivotal moment in his career came with his Academy Award-nominated performance as Vincent Mancini in Francis Ford Coppola’s “The Godfather Part III” (1990), which solidified his status as a leading man.

Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Garcia continued to build a diverse filmography, appearing in “When a Man Loves a Woman” (1994) and portraying Lucky Luciano in “Hoodlum” (1997). He gained widespread recognition for his role as Terry Benedict in Steven Soderbergh’s “Ocean’s Eleven” (2001) and its sequels. Beyond acting, Garcia has also established himself as a director and producer, notably co-writing, directing, and starring in “The Lost City” (2005). He also earned Primetime Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for his work in “For Love or Country: The Arturo Sandoval Story” (2000) and won Grammy and Latin Grammy Awards in 2005 for producing Cuban musician Cachao’s record.
