Jacqueline Anne Oatley, born on December 28, 1974, in Wolverhampton, West Midlands, is an English broadcaster recognized for her extensive work in football commentary. Initially pursuing a career in intellectual property after graduating with a German degree from the University of Leeds in 1996, a significant knee injury while playing amateur football prompted her to reconsider her professional path. This turning point led her to pursue her passion for sports journalism, studying print journalism and radio production in evening classes and subsequently completing a Postgraduate Diploma in Broadcast Journalism at Sheffield Hallam University. She began her journalism career at BBC Radio Leeds as a sports reporter.
Oatley gained prominence in 2005 when she became the first woman to commentate on a football match on British network radio for BBC Radio 5 Live. Her trailblazing efforts continued in 2007, marking her as the first female commentator on BBC One’s flagship football program, “Match of the Day,” a show she would later present in 2015. Her international broadcast career includes calling FIFA World Cup matches for the host broadcaster’s world feed in 2019 and serving as a host for ITV’s FIFA World Cup coverage in Russia in 2018. In 2022, she made history again with FOX Sports, becoming the first woman to call a men’s FIFA World Cup match for a U.S. network, covering multiple games from Qatar.
Her career further progressed with roles as a lead play-by-play commentator for the FA Women’s Super League on Sky Sports from 2021 to 2023. In March 2023, she joined CBS Sports as the lead television main commentator for the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL). Oatley has also presented for ITV Sport’s live darts coverage since 2015 and has been a lead commentator for UEFA Euro 2024 for Fox Sports. Her contributions to broadcasting and diversity in sport were recognized with an MBE in the 2016 New Year Honours, and she received an Honorary Doctor of Letters from the University of Wolverhampton in September 2016.
