Javicia Leslie

Javicia Leslie was born on May 30, 1987, in Augsburg, Germany. Her family later moved to Upper Marlboro, Maryland, where she was raised. Leslie attended Hampton University, where she participated in theatrical productions such as August Wilson’s “Seven Guitars,” Ntozake Shange’s “For Colored Girls,” and Bob Fosse’s “Chicago.” Her early career included a lead role in the television film “Killer Coach” and appearances in series like “MacGyver” and “Chef Julian.” In 2017, she filmed a role in “The Family Business,” based on Carl Weber’s novel, and in 2018, she secured a series regular role as Ali Finer in “God Friended Me” for CBS, appearing in 42 episodes until 2020. Leslie also played the lead role of Corina James in the 2019 film “Always a Bridesmaid.”

In 2020, Leslie made history by being cast as Ryan Wilder/Batwoman in The CW’s “Batwoman,” becoming the first bisexual Black actress to portray the character. Her tenure as Batwoman spanned 31 episodes across 2021 and 2022. Following her role in “Batwoman,” she reprised the character and also played Red Death in five episodes of the final season of “The Flash” (2021–2023). In 2022, she was seen in the film “Something from Tiffany’s” as Sophia and in “We Are Gathered Here Today” as Jen Stone-Spitz. Her work continued with the 2023 film “Double Life,” where she played Jo Creuzot, and “The Christmas Detective” as Kate Bennett. Leslie has also demonstrated her skills behind the camera, directing the short film “Black Excellence” in 2021.

Currently, Leslie is a series regular in the new ABC drama “High Potential,” portraying Detective Daphne, with the series slated to premiere in fall 2024. She continues to appear in “The Family Business” as Paris Duncan (2018–2024). Beyond acting and directing, Leslie is trained in Muay Thai, boxing, weapons, dance, track, and swimming. She is also a philanthropist, having founded The Chandler Foundation, which supports young people in Prince George’s County, Maryland, by providing resources for education and athletic programs, reflecting her commitment to community enrichment.
