Jessica Capshaw

Jessica Brooke Capshaw was born on August 9, 1976, in Columbia, Missouri, to actress Kate Capshaw and salesman Robert Capshaw. Her parents were students at the University of Missouri. At age three, her parents divorced. Her mother later married director Steven Spielberg when Jessica was 15 years old. Capshaw acquired a strong educational foundation, graduating from Harvard-Westlake School in Los Angeles in 1994 before attending Brown University. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature in 1998, with additional acting training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London where she performed in a production of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’.

Capshaw’s acting career began with a minor role in ‘The Locusts’ (1997) and an appearance in the independent film ‘Denial’ (1998). Her early television work included roles in ‘Odd Man Out’ (1999–2000) and ‘ER’ (1999). A pivotal role came in 2002 when she joined the cast of the legal drama ‘The Practice’ as Jamie Stringer, appearing in 42 episodes until 2004. She also had roles in films such as ‘Valentine’ (2001) and Steven Spielberg’s ‘Minority Report’ (2002), and ‘The Groomsmen’ (2006).

In 2009, Capshaw became a series regular on the medical drama ‘Grey’s Anatomy’, portraying pediatric surgeon Dr. Arizona Robbins. Her character achieved significant recognition as one of the first LGBTQ+ characters in a regular role on network television. She remained with the show for 225 episodes until 2018, making guest appearances in 2024. Following her departure from ‘Grey’s Anatomy’, Capshaw has taken on new projects, including a main role as Blythe Hart in the upcoming series ‘9-1-1: Nashville’, scheduled to premiere in 2025.
