Joseph Glenn Herbert, known professionally as Jo Koy, was born on June 2, 1971, at Misawa Air Base, Japan. His early life involved moving from Spanaway, Washington, to Tacoma, Washington, before his family settled in Las Vegas. He initially enrolled at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, but left to pursue a career in stand-up comedy, beginning with performances at a Las Vegas coffee house and open mic nights. His stage name, “Jo Koy,” originated from a misinterpretation of a family nickname in 1989.
Koy gained prominence through regular appearances as a panelist on E!’s late-night show “Chelsea Lately,” with appearances on over 140 episodes. He has released six comedy specials through Comedy Central and Netflix, including “Live from Seattle” (2017), “Comin’ in Hot” (2019), “In His Elements” (2020), and “Live from the LA Forum” (2022). In 2018, he received the “Stand-Up Comedian Of The Year” award at the Just For Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal. He also reached #1 on the Billboard Charts in 2019 with his stand-up comedy album, “Live From Seattle.”
Beyond stand-up, Koy has ventured into acting, appearing in films such as “Easter Sunday” (2022), which was inspired by his life experiences, “Haunted Mansion” (2023), and voice roles in animated features like “The Monkey King” (2023) and “Leo” (2023). He hosted the 81st Golden Globe Awards in 2024. He also hosts a weekly podcast, “The Koy Pond with Jo Koy,” where he discusses various topics with other comedians.
