About

Joel Embiid was born on March 16, 1994, in Yaoundé, Cameroon. He initially pursued sports like volleyball and soccer, eventually discovering basketball at age 15. Mentored by fellow Cameroonian and NBA player Luc Mbah a Moute, Embiid relocated to the United States at 16 to develop his basketball skills. He attended Montverde Academy and The Rock School in Florida before committing to the University of Kansas in November 2012. After one season with the Kansas Jayhawks, where he earned Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year honors and was named second-team All-Big 12, Embiid declared for the NBA draft.

Drafted third overall by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 2014 NBA draft, Embiid’s professional debut was delayed by multiple foot and knee injuries. He missed his first two seasons, making his awaited debut in the 2016-17 season. Despite limited playing time due to injuries, he was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team. Embiid has since established himself as a prominent figure in the league, earning multiple NBA All-Star selections, All-NBA Team honors, and All-Defensive Team recognition. He led the NBA in scoring in both the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons, becoming the first center to achieve this feat since Shaquille O’Neal in 2000 and the first foreign player to lead the league in scoring.

Embiid achieved a significant milestone in 2023, being named the NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP). Off the court, he holds triple citizenship (Cameroonian, French, and American) and represented the United States at the 2024 Summer Olympics, where he secured a gold medal. In 2023, Embiid launched Miniature Géant, a media company in partnership with The SpringHill Company, focused on African storytelling. He has also engaged in various brand partnerships and philanthropic efforts, including donating his 2021 NBA All-Star Game winnings to combat homelessness in Philadelphia.
