John Vincent Orlando, born on January 24, 2003, in Mississauga, Ontario, began his rise to prominence by posting covers of popular songs on YouTube. His sister, Darian, created the “JohnnyOsings” channel in December 2011, uploading his rendition of Justin Bieber’s “Mistletoe.” This initial video unexpectedly garnered over 100,000 views within a month, prompting him and his sister to continue releasing covers of artists such as Taylor Swift, Rihanna, Justin Bieber, and Shawn Mendes. Darian served as the director, shooter, producer, and editor for these early videos, laying the foundation for Orlando’s career.
Orlando’s musical journey progressed with the release of his debut EP, “VXIIXI,” in 2015 at the age of 12. His talent received notable acknowledgment in 2017 when P!nk praised his cover of her song “Just Give Me a Reason” in a Glamour video, specifically commending his voice control. This period marked a turning point, leading to a recording deal with Universal Music Canada on May 18, 2018. Following this, he released several singles, including “Day and Night” and “What If” (both featuring Mackenzie Ziegler), “Last Summer,” and “Waste My Time.” His second EP, “Teenage Fever,” was released on March 15, 2019, which he supported with a headlining North American tour from April 29 to May 22, 2019, with Hayden Summerall and Gus McMillan as supporting acts.
The trajectory of Orlando’s career continued upwards with significant industry recognition. In 2019, he received a nomination for the Juno Award for Breakthrough Artist of the Year. He also achieved consecutive wins for the MTV Europe Music Award for Best Canadian Act in 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022. In July 2020, MTV announced a global talent and consumer products deal with Orlando, further solidifying his presence in the entertainment landscape. His third EP, “It’s Never Really Over,” was released on October 23, 2020. In 2022, he released his debut studio album, “All the Things That Could Go Wrong,” and in 2023, he participated in a charity single, “What I Wouldn’t Do,” for Kids Help Phone’s Feel Out Loud campaign.
