Major-General Jonathon Shaw, CB, CBE, is a distinguished former British Army officer. Following his studies of PPE at Oxford University, Shaw became a platoon commander with 3rd Battalion, Parachute Regiment during the Falklands War. Following his attendance of Staff College, Camberley (1989 – 1990), he was made commanding officer of 2nd Battalion, Parachute Regiment in 1997.
In 2000, Shaw attended the Higher Command and Staff Course at the Joint Services Command and Staff College and was subsequently made Commander of the 12th Brigade two years later, commanding the Multi-National Brigade (centre) in Kosovo. Shaw continued to advance in his career and was appointed Director Special Forces in 2003, going on to become General Officer Commanding Multi-National Division (south east) Iraq in 2006, after attending the Royal College of Defence Studies. Just a year later, Shaw became Chief of Staff at HQ Land Forces. In 2009, he was appointed Assistant Chief of Defence Staff (International Security Policy) and Assistant Chief of Defence Staff (Global Issues) in 2011. Shaw’s responsibilities included Chemical Biological Radiological & Nuclear Policy, Arms Control and Counter Proliferation and Cyber.
In 2012, Shaw was publically recognised for his services and career and appointed CB, in the same year that he retired from the army. 2014 saw the publication of Shaw’s book, titled Britain in a Perilous World: The Strategic Defence and Security Review We Need, which was met with positive reviews.
