Julia Kern was born on September 12, 1997, in Berkeley, California, and grew up in Waltham, Massachusetts. She learned to ski from her German parents and grandparents at a young age, becoming fluent in German. Kern participated in three Junior World Championships between 2015 and 2017. Her best individual result during this period was a 9th place finish in the sprint classic at the 2017 Junior World Championships in Soldier Hollow. In the same year, she earned a bronze medal as part of the American 4 x 3.33 km relay team, marking an early career highlight.
Kern debuted in the World Cup during the 2016–17 season. She advanced to the 2019 World Championships in Seefeld, Austria, where she placed 19th in the 15 km skiathlon and 23rd in the individual sprint. As a member of the American relay team, she contributed to a fifth-place finish in the 4 x 5 km relay. On December 21, 2019, Kern achieved her first World Cup podium, securing third place in a sprint freestyle event in Planica, Slovenia. Her steady progression led to her representing the United States at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, where she competed in the Sprint Freestyle and 2 x 7.5km Skiathlon.
Further achievements include a bronze medal with Jessie Diggins in the team sprint at the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2023 in Planica. She also secured a silver medal in the Team Sprint at the 2025 Trondheim World Championships. Throughout her career, Kern has accumulated six World Cup medals and six U.S. National Championships. In addition to her athletic pursuits, she engages in community-driven outdoor activities, photography, design, and videography.
