Aino-Kaisa Saarinen was born on February 1, 1979, in Hollola, Finland. She embarked on her cross-country skiing career in the World Cup circuit in 1998, establishing a long and distinguished tenure that continued until 2018. During her twenty-year career, Saarinen competed in four Winter Olympic Games, beginning with Turin in 2006. She is noted for holding the record for the most individual World Cup starts for both men and women, with 354 appearances.
Throughout her career, Saarinen consistently achieved podium finishes at major international competitions. She earned five Olympic medals, including two silver medals and three bronze medals. Her World Championship record is even more extensive, with ten medals overall. This includes four gold medals, one silver medal, and five bronze medals from various events, highlighting her consistent performance across different racing formats. Her first World Cup victory came on March 17, 2007, when she won the 30 km classical event at the Holmenkollen ski festival. Saarinen also finished second in the 2008/09 Tour de Ski, demonstrating her enduring presence at the elite level of the sport. Post-retirement, Aino-Kaisa Saarinen has been appointed as the new secretary general of the Lahti Ski Games, continuing her involvement in the sport in an administrative capacity.
