Argentine rugby union player Julián Montoya competes for the Leicester Tigers in England’s Premiership Rugby. He plays hooker. In Argentina, Montoya competed for Club Newman and Pampas XV. Since 2014, he has represented Argentina internationally. From 2016 to 2020, he participated in Super Rugby for the Jaguares of SANZAAR. With Leicester, he won the Premiership Rugby championship in 2022.
At the 2013 IRB Junior World Championship, Montoya competed for the Argentina national under-20 rugby union squad. Later, he would also play for the Jaguars of Argentina. His debut for Argentina came on May 17, 2014, at Paysandu, Brazil, during Argentina’s 65-9 victory against Uruguay in the South American Rugby Championship. He participated twice in each of the championship teams for Argentina in 2014 and 2015, scoring a try on both occasions. He was selected for the 2015 Rugby Championship and made his tournament debut on July 17, 2015, in Christchurch, when New Zealand defeated him 39–18. He has earned 2 tries in his 8 appearances for the “Pumas,” totaling 10 points.
On November 14, 2020, Montoya started for the Argentina national team in their historic victory over the All Blacks. The move was eventually confirmed as an instant transfer on January 20, 2021, despite rumours that Montoya had agreed to join Leicester Tigers for the 2021–22 Premiership Rugby season in June 2020. He started when Tigers defeated Saracens 15-12 in the 2022 Premiership Rugby final.
