Julián Montoya was born on October 29, 1993, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He began his rugby career at Club Newman before transitioning to senior rugby with Pampas XV. In 2015, he joined Jaguares, a team formed to participate in Super Rugby. Montoya’s early career involved gaining experience in Argentina’s academy system, eventually progressing to the U20 squad. Discussions were held about him remaining in England after a school tour, but he continued his development in Argentina.
Montoya secured a move to Leicester Tigers in January 2021, following the disbandment of Jaguares in 2020. This move was preceded by a short-term deal with Western Force that was not realized due to visa issues. At Leicester Tigers, he made an immediate impact, scoring five tries in his first six games in English rugby and contributing to the team reaching a European Challenge Cup final in his inaugural season. His first full season saw him play a key role in Leicester Tigers securing their first Premiership title in nine seasons in 2021-22, starting 18 Premiership games, including the final against Saracens. Montoya has accumulated 23 tries in 44 games for Leicester Tigers.
Internationally, Montoya earned his first cap for Argentina in 2014 against Uruguay, later scoring his first senior international try against Chile. He has been a significant figure for the Argentina national team, becoming captain of Los Pumas in 2021. Under his captaincy, Argentina achieved a historic first win over New Zealand in Christchurch in 2022. That same year, he led the team to a significant away victory against England at Twickenham. Montoya is noted as the only Argentinian captain to achieve wins over Australia (2022, 2023, 2024 & 2025), New Zealand (2022, 2025), and South Africa (2024), placing him among a select group of captains with this achievement. He continued to demonstrate leadership at Leicester Tigers, taking over the matchday captaincy from Hanro Liebenberg midway through the 2022-23 Gallagher Premiership season and being named in the division’s team of the season for a second consecutive campaign. In June 2025, it was confirmed that Montoya would depart Leicester Tigers to join French side Pau in the Top 14 for the 2025-26 season.
