Kaillie Humphries was born in Calgary in 1985. She initially pursued alpine skiing, reaching the Canadian national development team at age 14. Her skiing career ended at 16 after separate leg injuries. In 2002, Humphries transitioned to bobsled as a brakewoman and was an alternate for the Canadian team at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, where she decided to become a bobsled pilot. This pivotal moment launched her into a distinguished career. She consistently demonstrated high performance, earning multiple World Cup victories and World Championship titles. Humphries competed for Canada in four Olympic Games, securing gold medals in the two-woman event at Vancouver 2010 and Sochi 2014, and a bronze at PyeongChang 2018.
In 2019, Humphries made the decision to switch her allegiance to the United States. This change followed a formal request for release from Bobsleigh Canada Skeleton due to alleged abuse and harassment. Representing the USA, she continued to achieve significant milestones, including two-woman gold at the 2020 World Championships. She added two more World Championship golds in 2021, one in the two-woman event with brakewoman Lolo Jones and another in the monobob event, which was set to debut at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics. Her career trajectory illustrates a consistent pursuit of competitive excellence and a willingness to overcome challenges to achieve her athletic goals.
At the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, Humphries became the first Olympic champion in the women’s monobob event, competing for Team USA. This victory made her the first woman in Olympic history to win gold medals for two different countries. Her achievements include three Olympic gold medals and one bronze medal, alongside numerous World Cup titles and World Championship gold medals. Humphries has also been an advocate for the inclusion of four-woman bobsleigh in the Olympic program, driving mixed-gender and all-female teams against male crews in World Cup events to promote equality and expand opportunities in the sport. These endeavors highlight her influence beyond her competitive results.
