Karin Konoval

Karin Konoval was born in Baltimore, Maryland, on June 4, 1961. She moved to Canada with her family as a child and was raised in Edmonton, Alberta, where she trained as a dancer until the age of 16. She pursued her education at the University of Alberta, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in theatre history. Following her graduation, Konoval moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, in 1981 to attend theatre school for two years, marking the beginning of her professional acting career. Her early career included performing lead roles in contemporary classics and various musicals, earning her numerous awards for her stage work. Beyond acting, Konoval is also an accomplished artist, writer, and choreographer. Her writing has been featured in several anthologies and literary magazines and has been broadcast on CBC Radio. In 2015, she authored and illustrated her children’s book, “Jeffrey Takes a Walk in December.” She also conducts solo gallery exhibits of her paintings.

Konoval has built a substantial career in both television and film, appearing in guest-starring and recurring roles in numerous TV series. Her television credits include roles as Commissioner Russo in “Wild Cards” (2024–2025), Dr. Pelton in “Snowpiercer” (2020–2024), Magda Jennings in “So Help Me Todd” (2024), Agatha Thatcher in “When Calls the Heart” (2015–2023), and her long-standing portrayal of Deena Petringa in “The Good Doctor” (2018–2020). She also appeared in “The X-Files” (1995–2018) in multiple roles. Her filmography features prominent roles such as Maurice the orangutan in the critically acclaimed “Planet of the Apes” trilogy, including “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” (2011), “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” (2014), and “War for the Planet of the Apes” (2017), a role she reprised in a cameo for “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” (2024).

Notably, Konoval received a Philip Borsos award for her lead role as Mary Leonard in the feature film “Cable Beach” (2004). Her dedication to her roles, particularly as Maurice, has led her to an in-depth study of orangutans, becoming an advocate for their protection. She has described her experiences with real orangutans as a significant inspiration for her performances. Throughout her career, Konoval has demonstrated a consistent ability to inhabit diverse characters across different genres, solidifying her reputation as a respected and versatile performer in the entertainment industry.
