Karin Konoval

Karin Konoval received a Philip Borsos award for her lead role as Mary Leonard in the 2004 feature film Cable Beach, following a distinguished early career in theatre. After earning a Bachelor of Arts in theatre history from the University of Alberta, Konoval moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, in 1981 to attend theatre school, commencing her professional acting career. Her early stage work saw her perform lead roles in contemporary classics and various musicals, for which she earned numerous accolades. Konoval’s career achieved critical acclaim with her transformative portrayal of the orangutan Maurice in the Planet of the Apes trilogy, including Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011), Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014), and War for the Planet of the Apes (2017).

Konoval portrayed Deena Petringa in The Good Doctor from 2018 to 2020 and Agatha Thatcher in When Calls the Heart from 2015 to 2023. She also appeared as Dr. Pelton in Snowpiercer (2020–2024) and held multiple roles in The X-Files throughout its run from 1995 to 2018. Her dedication to her roles, particularly as Maurice, has led her to an in-depth study of orangutans, becoming an advocate for their protection and drawing inspiration from real-life experiences for her performances.

Most recently, Konoval has taken on roles as Commissioner Russo in the 2024–2025 series Wild Cards and Magda Jennings in So Help Me Todd in 2024. She also reprised her iconic role as Maurice with a cameo appearance in the 2024 film Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Consistently demonstrating her ability to inhabit diverse characters across varied genres, Konoval continues to solidify her reputation as a respected and versatile performer in the entertainment industry.
