Karl and Daan co-authored their first book, "Couple of Men – Ein Männerpaar reist um die Welt" ('A Couple of Men – Traveling Around the World'), published by Polyglott, one of Germany's biggest travel and lifestyle publishers. The book is recognized as the first German-speaking travel book by and for the LGBTQ+ Community.
Karl Krause, from a small mountain village near Dresden, Germany, and Daan Colijn, from Amsterdam, Netherlands, met in Berlin and quickly began traveling together, establishing a connection that evolved into a travel blogging career. Prior to their joint ventures, Karl’s early travel experiences involved exploring Europe and a significant first trip outside the continent to Thailand, China, and Sri Lanka at 22, sparking his interest in different cultures and his identity as a gay man. Daan received his first passport at six for a trip to Euro Disney, demonstrating an early inclination towards exploring new places. Their shared passion for discovery led them to establish ‘Couple of Men’, a platform dedicated to LGBTQ-inclusive travel and storytelling.
Over more than a decade, Karl and Daan have traveled to over 50 countries across five continents, documenting their experiences as a German-Dutch gay couple. Their work focuses on exploring the world safely and joyfully, especially for mature gay and bear men. They cover a wide range of topics including gay cruising hotspots, bear-friendly escapes, and Pride celebrations. Their platform, ‘Couple of Men’, initially grew from Karl’s former blog ‘Karlisworld’, and has garnered a significant following. They actively use their social media presence, including Instagram with 50k-100k followers, to share their journey and advocate for LGBTQ+ visibility and acceptance. They have been recognized with the LGBTIQ+ Storyteller Award by Lonely Planet, highlighting their impact in the LGBTQ+ travel community.
A significant milestone in their career occurred in May 2022 with the publication of their first book, “Couple of Men – Ein Männerpaar reist um die Welt” (‘A Couple of Men – Traveling Around the World’). This book, published by Polyglott, a major German travel and lifestyle publisher, was noted as the first German-speaking travel book by and for the LGBTQ+ Community. The book details their story as a gay couple, the challenges faced by queer travelers, and their experiences exploring the world. They actively engage with their audience through various social media channels and contribute to broader discussions on LGBTQ+ rights and travel, encouraging conscious, respectful, and joyful exploration.
