Kenneth Hartley Blanchard was born on May 6, 1939, in Orange, New Jersey. He attended New Rochelle High School, graduating in 1957. His academic journey continued with a Bachelor of Arts degree in government and philosophy from Cornell University in 1961, followed by a Master of Arts degree in sociology and counseling from Colgate University in 1963. He completed his formal education with a Doctor of Philosophy degree in education administration and leadership from Cornell University in 1967. This educational foundation laid the groundwork for his extensive career focusing on organizational behavior and leadership.

In 1979, Ken Blanchard co-founded The Ken Blanchard Companies with his wife, Marjorie Blanchard, in San Diego, California. This international management training and consulting firm became a significant platform for his leadership principles. He gained widespread recognition with the publication of his book, “The One Minute Manager,” co-authored with Spencer Johnson in 1982. This book has sold over 15 million copies and has been translated into numerous languages. He is also recognized as the co-creator, with Dr. Paul Hersey, of Situational Leadership, a theory developed during their work on the textbook “Management of Organizational Behavior.”

Throughout his career, Blanchard has authored or co-authored over 70 books, with combined sales exceeding 28 million copies, translated into 47 languages. Notable works include “Leadership and the One Minute Manager” (1985), “Raving Fans” (1993), and “Gung Ho!” (1997). In 2005, he was inducted into Amazon’s Hall of Fame as one of the top 25 bestselling authors. Blanchard has served as a Cornell University trustee emeritus and a visiting professor at the Cornell University School of Hotel Administration, where he and his wife were named Cornell Entrepreneurs of the Year in 1991. He continues to share his insights on leadership and management as the Chief Spiritual Officer of his firm and through various speaking engagements.
