New Zealand KJ Apa has become a recognized actor and musician, transitioning from New Zealand television to prominent roles in international films and television series, while also pursuing a music career.

Keneti James Fitzgerald “KJ” Apa was born on June 17, 1997, in Auckland, New Zealand. His career began in New Zealand television, where he gained initial recognition for his role as Kane Jenkins in the soap opera “Shortland Street” from 2013 to 2015. He later appeared in the local sci-fi drama “The Cul de Sac” in 2016. Apa’s move to international projects marked a significant turning point in his career.
In 2017, Apa achieved widespread global recognition for his lead role as Archie Andrews in The CW’s teen drama series “Riverdale,” based on the Archie Comics. This role followed a four-month global talent search. During the same year, he also made his American film debut as teenage Ethan Montgomery in the comedy-drama “A Dog’s Purpose.” His filmography continued to expand with notable roles, such as Chris in the 2018 drama film “The Hate U Give,” Griffin in the 2019 Netflix film “The Last Summer,” and Jeremy Camp in the 2020 biographical romantic drama “I Still Believe.” Beyond acting, Apa has also ventured into music, independently releasing his debut album “Clocks” in 2021, and adopting the musical alter ego Mr. Fantasy in 2025.
Apa’s career progression reflects his versatility across acting genres and his expansion into music production. He has been involved in both film and television productions, including an executive producer role for the 2024 film “One Fast Move.” His work has earned him a Saturn Award for Breakthrough Performance in 2017 for “Riverdale” and numerous nominations, including for MTV Movie & TV Awards, People’s Choice Awards, and Teen Choice Awards. In addition to his entertainment career, Apa was awarded the matai title of Savae by his native village Moata’a in Samoa in 2022.
