A member of the British Sailing Team, Lorenzo Brando Chiavarini is a Laser Standard class sailor from Scotland. Born in Italy, Chiavarini is an adopted Scot who has sailed the seas since he was a toddler. He won both the 2014 U21 World and European championship titles, and the Laser Standard Olympic Team member is now working hard towards achieving his Olympic dream at the Tokyo Summer Games.
Chiavarini was born in Rome but found his love of sailing as a child in his adopted Bellanoch Bay in Argyll. He became a British Sailing Team Member when he was just 12 years old, and his first year in the Laser Standard saw Chiavarini become the U19 European Champion in 2012. He also picked up a Glasgow Commonwealth Games Committee Award of Merit and the Scottish Young Sailor of the Year Award in the same year and won the BUCS Student National Championships.
The young sailor began to rise to prominence further in 2013 when he won a Bronze medal at the U21 European Championship and finished fourth at the World Under 21 Championship. 2013 also saw Chiavarini win the Men’s British National Championship and the UK Qualifier Series, helping him to rise to the number one ranking in the UK. Since then, Chiavarini has overcome a wrist injury that once threatened to end his career to keep his Olympic dream alive.
