About

Lukas Dhont was born in Ghent, Belgium, on June 11, 1991. His interest in film began early, with his mother, Hilbe, working as a fashion teacher at an art school, and his younger brother, Michiel, later becoming a producer. As a teenager, Dhont gained early industry exposure by working as a costume design assistant on various film and television sets. This initial experience in production laid the groundwork for his future career in filmmaking. He later attended film school after completing a Catholic high school education. His personal experiences and observations during his formative years have often influenced the themes and narratives explored in his directorial work.

Dhont made his feature-length directorial debut in 2018 with “Girl,” a drama inspired by Nora Monsecour’s story, focusing on a trans girl pursuing a ballet career. The film premiered at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival, where it was awarded the Caméra d’Or for best first feature film and the Queer Palm. It also received the André Cavens Award for Best Film and was selected as Belgium’s entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the 91st Academy Awards. “Girl” garnered nine nominations at the 9th Magritte Awards, winning four, including Best Flemish Film and Best Screenplay for Dhont. His second feature, “Close,” premiered at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, where it shared the Grand Prix with Claire Denis’ “Stars At Noon.” “Close” also won the Sydney Film Prize in June 2022 and received an Academy Award nomination for Best International Feature Film in 2023. The film draws from Dhont’s own school experiences, exploring the friendship between two adolescent boys.

In 2019, Dhont was recognized on the Forbes 30 Under 30 Europe list for his contributions to the entertainment industry. He, alongside his brother Michiel, established their independent production company, The Reunion, to produce challenging and impactful stories. Through this company, they are actively involved in developing new projects, including “Julian” (2025) and “Young Mothers” (2025), where Lukas serves as a producer. In 2024, Dhont was invited to become a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and he presided over the Queer Palm jury for the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, further solidifying his standing within the international film community. He is currently developing an untitled film with screenwriter Laurent Lunetta.
