Lukas Moodysson

Lukas Moodysson was born on January 17, 1969, in Malmö, Skåne län, Sweden. He commenced his artistic career as a poet, publishing five poetry collections and a novel by the age of 23. Moodysson transitioned into filmmaking to reach a broader audience, attending the Dramatiska Institutet in Sweden. After directing three short films, he achieved significant domestic and international recognition with his 1998 romantic film, “Show Me Love,” known in Sweden as “Fucking Åmål.” This film, depicting a love story in a small Swedish town, garnered four Guldbagge Awards, including Best Film, Best Actress, Best Direction, and Best Script.

Following the success of “Show Me Love,” Moodysson directed “Together” in 2000, a film set in a 1970s Stockholm commune, further cementing his reputation. In 2002, he directed “Lilya 4-Ever,” a more somber film that earned critical acclaim and was featured in many American critics’ top ten lists. His career has also included more experimental works such as “A Hole in My Heart” (2004) and “Container” (2006). Moodysson made his English-language debut with “Mammoth” in 2009. His 2013 film, “We Are the Best!”, based on a comic by his wife Coco Moodysson, revisited themes reminiscent of his earlier successes. His most recent work includes the 2019 HBO TV series “Gösta” and the 2023 sequel, “Together 99.”

Across his career, Moodysson’s films have consistently explored diverse narrative styles, from naturalistic drama to abstract experimentation. He has been a consistent collaborator with Memfis Film, a Swedish production company, which has supported many of his projects. Moodysson has received numerous awards, including the Teddy Award for Best Feature Film for “Fucking Åmål” in 1999, multiple awards at the Gijón International Film Festival for “Together” and “Lilya 4-Ever,” and the Stig Dagerman Prize in 2003. He continues to be an active filmmaker and writer, known for his distinct voice and thematic depth.
