Mackenyu was born in Los Angeles on November 16, 1996, the son of actor and martial artist Shin’ichi Chiba. Growing up, he developed a diverse range of interests including horseback riding, Kyokushin Karate, gymnastics, water polo, wrestling, and music, learning piano at age ten and later mastering saxophone and flute. He appeared in films and TV shows during his school years in Los Angeles, setting the foundation for his acting career. His background in martial arts and swordsmanship has contributed to his ability to perform his own stunts, a notable skill in his roles.
Mackenyu rose to prominence with his role as Wataya Arata in the Chihayafuru trilogy (2016), which earned him the 40th Annual Japan Academy Newcomer of the Year Award in 2017. His career gained international recognition with his supporting role as Cadet Ryoichi in “Pacific Rim: Uprising” (2018) and a lead role in the racing action film “Over Drive” (2018). He continued to secure significant roles, including the villain Enishi Yukishiro in “Rurouni Kenshin: Final Chapter” (2021) and Scar in the “Fullmetal Alchemist” films in 2022.
In 2021, Mackenyu was cast as Roronoa Zoro in Netflix’s live-action series adaptation of “One Piece” (2023), a role that further solidified his international presence. He also took on the lead role of Seiya in “Knights of the Zodiac” (2023) and starred in two Disney+ projects in 2023, “Dragons of Wonderhatch” and “House Of The Owl.” Beyond acting, Mackenyu launched his own jewelry line, INCRM, demonstrating his interests in fashion and design.
