Maitreyi Ramakrishnan was born on December 28, 2001, in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, where she was also raised. Her parents were Sri Lankan Tamil refugees who had immigrated to Canada following the civil war in their home country. Ramakrishnan attended Lisgar Middle School and later graduated from Meadowvale Secondary School. During her final year at Meadowvale, she decided to pursue an acting career.
Her professional acting journey began in 2019 when she was selected by Mindy Kaling from 15,000 candidates for the leading role of Devi Vishwakumar in the Netflix teen comedy-drama series “Never Have I Ever.” Ramakrishnan, who was 17 at the time and had no prior professional acting experience, created her audition tape at a local library using her mother’s camera. This casting attracted significant media attention, particularly in Canada, due to her Tamil Canadian identity and the open casting call process. In April 2020, “Never Have I Ever” premiered on Netflix, with Ramakrishnan’s character, Devi Vishwakumar, loosely based on Mindy Kaling’s experiences. The series ran for four seasons until June 2023, and Ramakrishnan’s performance received positive reviews, with Variety describing it as a “breakout performance.”
Following her breakthrough, Ramakrishnan continued to expand her roles. In February 2021, she was recognized as a “Breakout Actor” on Time’s Time100 Next list. She transitioned into film and voice acting, voicing Priya Mangal in the Pixar animated fantasy comedy film “Turning Red” (2022). She also lent her voice to Zipp Storm in the “My Little Pony” franchise, appearing in “My Little Pony: Tell Your Tale” (2022–2024) and “My Little Pony: Make Your Mark” (2022–2023). In April 2022, Ramakrishnan received the honorary Radius Award from the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television for her global impact. Her live-action film debut came with a supporting role in the comedy-drama “Slanted” (2025). She is also anticipated to appear in Disney’s “Freakier Friday” (2025), and has committed to other future projects, including “The Angry Birds Movie 3” (2027) and the Netflix dance comedy “Best of the Best.”
