Major Wright was born on July 1, 1988, in Lauderdale Lakes, Florida. He attended St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale, where he excelled in high school football, recording numerous tackles and interceptions. As a senior, he was a finalist for the Hall Trophy. He also participated in track and field, demonstrating his athletic versatility. Wright then accepted an athletic scholarship to the University of Florida, playing for the Florida Gators football team from 2007 to 2009. As a freshman in 2007, he started seven games at free safety, accumulating 67 tackles and four forced fumbles. He was recognized as a first-team freshman All-American by CollegeFootballNews.com.
His collegiate career continued with significant achievements, including starting all 14 games as a sophomore in 2008. During this season, he recorded 66 tackles and four interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown. He played a crucial role in the Gators’ victory in the 2009 BCS National Championship Game against the Oklahoma Sooners, contributing nine tackles and an interception. After his junior year, Wright decided to enter the NFL draft.
Wright was selected by the Chicago Bears in the third round of the 2010 NFL Draft. He played for the Bears from 2010 to 2013, making his first career interception in 2011 and scoring his first pick-six against the Detroit Lions in the same year. In the 2012 season, he started all 16 games as a strong safety, achieving four interceptions and 52 tackles. In 2014, he signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he played until 2016. Post-NFL, Wright has become an author, releasing “Major Pain: Confessions Of A Smash-Mouth Safety” in 2020 and “Good Deed Tuesday” in 2022. He also founded Wright Way Charities in 2021, focusing on supporting single mothers and promoting positive values among youth in Fort Lauderdale.
