Malin Akerman was born in Stockholm, Sweden, on May 12, 1978. Her family relocated to Toronto, Canada, when she was two years old, where she was raised. At age five, she began appearing in television commercials. Her parents divorced when she was six, leading her father to return to Sweden. At 17, Akerman won the Canadian Ford Supermodel title, enabling her to work as a catwalk model in Europe for three years. She initially pursued a degree in child psychology at York University, but a guest role offer in “Earth: Final Conflict” (1997) shifted her focus back to acting. In 2001, she moved to Los Angeles to further her acting career, securing roles in both television and film. Her breakthrough arrived with her casting as Silk Spectre II in “Watchmen” (2009).
Akerman’s career progressed with notable roles in romantic comedies such as “The Heartbreak Kid” (2007) and “27 Dresses” (2008), followed by box office hits like “The Proposal” (2009) and “Couples Retreat” (2009). She received a Saturn Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her work in “Watchmen.” On television, Akerman was a main cast member in the Adult Swim comedy series “Childrens Hospital” (2010–2016) and earned critical acclaim for her lead role in the ABC sitcom “Trophy Wife” (2013–2014), where she also served as a producer. Her performance in the comedy horror film “The Final Girls” (2015) earned her a Fangoria Chainsaw Award nomination. From 2016 to 2019, she held a main role as Lara Axelrod in the Showtime drama series “Billions.”
Beyond acting, Akerman had a brief music career as the lead vocalist for the alternative rock band The Petalstones, releasing their debut album in 2005 before dedicating herself fully to acting. In 2018, she became a United States citizen and in 2024, she co-hosted the Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö, Sweden, alongside Petra Mede. Her recent projects include the action film “Rampage” (2018), independent dramas “I’ll See You in My Dreams” (2015) and “To the Stars” (2019), and upcoming roles in “The Hunting Wives” (2025) and “Perfectly Imperfect” (2026). She also participated as a contestant on “The Masked Singer” in 2023.
