Mark Lawrence was born in 1966 in the United States and later moved to the United Kingdom as a young child. He pursued a strong academic path, earning a degree in physics and a PhD in mathematics. Following his education, Lawrence worked as a research scientist, specializing in artificial intelligence and image processing, also contributing to decision and reasoning theory. During his career as a scientist, he held secret-level clearance with both US and UK governments, highlighting his involvement in sensitive research projects, including the “Star Wars” missile-defense program.
Lawrence transitioned into a highly successful career as a novelist, publishing his first acclaimed work, “Prince of Thorns,” in August 2011. This marked the beginning of “The Broken Empire” trilogy, which quickly garnered significant recognition, including being a finalist for the Goodreads Choice Award for “Best Fantasy 2011” and one of Barnes & Noble’s “Best Fantasy Releases of 2011.” His subsequent novels, “King of Thorns” (2012) and “Emperor of Thorns” (2013), continued this success, with “Emperor of Thorns” becoming a Sunday Times Bestseller and winning the David Gemmell Award for Fantasy in 2014. These achievements cemented his reputation in the fantasy genre.
Since his debut, Lawrence has authored several other successful trilogies, including “The Red Queen’s War” (2014-2016), “Book of the Ancestor” (2017-2019), “Impossible Times” (2019), “The Book of the Ice” (2020-2022), and “The Library Trilogy” (2023-2025).
