Master Gee of the sugarhill gang

American rapper and successful entrepreneur in the magazine industry Guy O’Brien is best known by his stage name, Master Gee, and as a founder of the fabulous Hip Hop group The Sugarhill Gang. He is an inaugural class inductee into the Hip Hop Museum Hall of Fame. He penned the iconic Rapper’s Delight in 1979, a song regarded as one of the 100 most important American musical works of the 20th Century and one of the most recognisable songs in the world. It was the first Hip Hop single to ever go Gold and Platinum and feature in the Billboard Top 100. A highly sought after public speaker and storyteller, Master Gee actively performs worldwide with The Sugarhill Gang and as a solo DJ. In 2019, he launched his own weekly radio show, Look, Listen, Learn, on WLVS Radio.

The unforgettable Master Gee grew up in New Jersey playing drums and DJing at parties, and established himself as an energetic MC in the pioneering Phase 2 Hip Hop crew. His gifts with a Numark Mixer, a Technics turntable and a knack for smooth vocal delivery soon delivered him a part as the first Hip Hop act featured on Dick Clark’s Bandstand. He, along with Big Bank Hank and Wonder Mike were discovered by producer Sylvia Robinson and brought together to form The Sugarhill Gang. Master Gee was just 17 at the time of recording Rapper’s Delight.
