Mehmet Cengiz Oz, born on June 11, 1960, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Turkish immigrant parents, established a distinguished career in medicine and media. He earned his undergraduate degree from Harvard University and a joint M.D.-M.B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine and Wharton School in 1986. Oz completed his residency in general surgery and a fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at Presbyterian Hospital in New York, where he later co-founded the Cardiac Complementary Care Center in April 1995. His medical career includes developing new procedures and medical devices for heart surgery, such as the MitraClip and left ventricular assist device (LVAD).
Oz’s transition into media began in 2003 with ‘Second Opinion with Dr. Oz’ on the Discovery Channel. His appearances on ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show,’ starting in 2004, propelled him to national recognition, leading to the launch of ‘The Dr. Oz Show’ in 2009, produced by Winfrey’s Harpo Productions and Sony Pictures Television. The show ran for 13 seasons, earning 10 Daytime Emmy Awards and establishing Oz as a prominent voice in health and wellness. Throughout his career, he has authored numerous academic articles and New York Times best-selling books, connecting millions with information on health and lifestyle choices.
In 2025, Oz was appointed and confirmed as the 17th Administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) by President Donald Trump. In this role, he leads the largest agency under the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), managing a $1.7 trillion budget focused on delivering health outcomes for over 160 million people. His agenda for CMS includes empowering individuals with personalized health solutions, improving information for healthcare providers, combating fraud and abuse, and shifting the focus from sick care to prevention and wellness. This appointment marked a significant turning point in his career, moving from public health education through media to direct governmental leadership in healthcare policy.
