Michael Carrick

Born on July 28, 1981, in Wallsend, Tyne and Wear, England, Michael Carrick began his football journey at Wallsend Boys Club, where he played five-a-side football from the age of four. Initially playing as a centre-forward, he later transitioned to midfield at West Ham United. His youth career at West Ham saw him win the FA Youth Cup in 1999, scoring twice in the final. Carrick made his senior debut for West Ham in 1999, which included loan spells at Swindon Town and Birmingham City. He quickly established himself in West Ham’s first team, earning Young Player of the Year honors for two consecutive seasons. Following West Ham’s relegation in 2003, Carrick moved to Tottenham Hotspur in 2004 for approximately £3.5 million, where he became an influential player for two seasons.

In 2006, Carrick joined Manchester United for a fee rising to £18.6 million, a move that would define his playing career. He became a crucial component of the Manchester United midfield, contributing significantly to their success. His tenure at Old Trafford included winning five Premier League titles, one FA Cup, three Football League/EFL Cups, six FA Community Shields, one UEFA Champions League, one UEFA Europa League, and one FIFA Club World Cup. Notably, he played the full 120 minutes of the 2008 UEFA Champions League final, converting his penalty in the shootout victory. Carrick was recognized for his intelligent, composed, and technically gifted style of play, earning him a spot in the PFA Team of the Year twice and being named Manchester United’s Players’ Player of the Year in 2012–13.

After retiring as a player in 2018, Carrick transitioned into coaching, joining Manchester United’s staff. He served as caretaker manager for Manchester United in 2021, leading the team to two wins and one draw in three matches. In October 2022, he was appointed head coach of Championship club Middlesbrough. Under his leadership, Middlesbrough saw a significant improvement, climbing from 21st in the league to a respectable fourth-place finish and reaching the EFL Cup semi-finals in his second season. Despite his eventual departure in 2025, Carrick’s coaching career has demonstrated his tactical acumen and leadership capabilities, building on his successful playing career.
