About

Michael Joseph Connelly, born on July 21, 1956, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, developed an early interest in crime and mystery, influenced by his mother’s passion for crime fiction. A pivotal moment in his youth, at age 16, involved discovering a gun, an incident that deepened his fascination with police work. Initially pursuing a degree in construction management at the University of Florida, a viewing of Robert Altman’s film ‘The Long Goodbye’ inspired him to switch to journalism with a minor in creative writing, focused on becoming a mystery writer. He then immersed himself in the works of Raymond Chandler, further shaping his literary aspirations.

Connelly began his professional career as a crime beat writer, first for the ‘Daytona Beach News-Journal’ and then for the ‘Fort Lauderdale News and Sun-Sentinel’ in 1981, covering the South Florida cocaine wars. His investigative work, including interviewing survivors of the 1985 Delta Flight 191 plane crash, earned him a Pulitzer Prize finalist nomination, leading to a position as a crime reporter at the ‘Los Angeles Times’ in 1987. His first published novel, ‘The Black Echo’ (1992), introduced his iconic character, Detective Hieronymus ‘Harry’ Bosch, and earned him the Edgar Award for Best First Novel. The success of his early Bosch novels allowed him to transition to full-time writing in 1995, marking a significant turning point in his career.

Over his career, Connelly has authored 38 novels and one non-fiction work, selling over 74 million copies worldwide and translated into 40 languages. His books have been adapted into major films, including ‘Blood Work’ (2002), directed by and starring Clint Eastwood, and ‘The Lincoln Lawyer’ (2011), starring Matthew McConaughey. He has also been a driving force behind television adaptations, co-creating and executive producing ‘Level 9’ (2000-2001), ‘Bosch’ (2015-2021) for Amazon Studios, and its spin-off ‘Bosch: Legacy’ (2022-2025). Furthermore, he serves as writer and executive producer for ‘The Lincoln Lawyer’ TV series on Netflix (2022-present), and is executive producing the upcoming ‘Ballard’ TV series based on his Renee Ballard novels. Connelly has received numerous accolades for his contributions to the mystery genre, including the Edgar Award, Anthony Award, and the Cartier Diamond Dagger.
