Michael Jung is a highly decorated eventing equestrian who was born on July 31, 1982, in Bad Soden, Germany. With more than two decades of experience in the sport of equestrian, Jung has established himself as one of the greatest riders of all time, having won numerous world championships and Olympic medals.
Jung began his equestrian career at the tender age of five, and at the age of 12, he was already competing in dressage competitions. In 2009, he won his first individual European Eventing Championship, becoming the youngest ever Champion in the sport. He followed up this achievement with a gold medal in the individual and team events at the 2010 World Equestrian Games.
Jung’s breakthrough moment came in 2012 when he won the individual gold medal at the London Olympics, becoming the first rider to win the event on a leased horse. He won his second individual gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics, and he was also part of the gold medal-winning German team in both events. In total, Jung has won three gold medals, one silver medal, and two bronze medals, making him one of the most successful German riders of all time.
Aside from his Olympic success, Jung has also won the prestigious Badminton Horse Trials three times (in 2016, 2015, and 2010), the Kentucky Three-Day Event (2018), and the Burghley Horse Trials (2015). In 2016, he became the first rider to hold eventing’s four major titles simultaneously: the Olympic, World, European, and Badminton titles.
Jung’s success has made him a role model for young riders, and he is known for his dedication, hard work, and passion for the sport. Away from the track, Jung enjoys spending time with his family, and he is also an ambassador for the German Cancer Aid charity. Despite his numerous achievements, Jung remains humble, continuously striving to improve his performance and push the boundaries of the sport he loves.
