Michael Ian Black was born in Chicago, Illinois, and later moved to Hillsborough, New Jersey. His early life included the divorce of his parents at age three and the tragic death of his father at twelve. He attended New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts before joining the comedy group “The State.” This group gained recognition with their own MTV show, “The State” (1993), which led to further collaborative projects. Black’s career continued to evolve with regular appearances on Comedy Central’s “Reno 911!” (2003) and performances as part of the comedy trio “Stella” alongside Michael Showalter and David Wain.

Black has maintained a prolific career, extending beyond acting to writing and directing. He penned screenplays for films like “Wedding Daze” (2006) and “Run, Fatboy, Run” (2007), also directing the former. His written works include numerous books, both for adults and children, such as “My Custom Van” (2008) and “A Child’s First Book of Trump” (2016). He has been a consistent presence on television, participating in VH1’s “I Love the…” series, co-creating and starring in “Michael & Michael Have Issues” (2009), and taking on roles in “Insatiable” (2018-2019) and “Search Party” (2022). His versatility as a performer and creator has allowed him to engage in a broad spectrum of comedic and dramatic projects.

His career also includes significant milestones in the podcasting world, including co-hosting “Mike and Tom Eat Snacks” with Tom Cavanagh (2010), “Topics” with Michael Showalter (2013), and his interview podcast “How to Be Amazing.” Black has contributed his voice to animated series like “Robot Chicken” and has appeared in commercial campaigns for brands such as Sierra Mist and Klondike. His current endeavors include being a regular panelist on CNN’s “Have I Got News For You” (2024–present) and appearing in upcoming film and television productions like “Superman” (2025) and “Peacemaker” (2025).
