Mike Benton is an award-winning American broadcaster and play-by-play reporter who has spent over 15 years behind the microphone in hockey and over 5 years as the “Voice of the Silvertips”. He handles all of the regional play-by-play coverage of the Everett Silvertips – based in Washington – across the radio stations KRKO 1380 AM and 95.3 FM. He’s also the host of his own popular Silvertips Hockey Show on everettsilvertips.com, and regularly writes on his blog “Benton Hockey” which is seen primarily through the Silvertps website and mobile app.
Benton’s iconic voice was behind the Tips Western Conference title run in 2017-18 and the winning call for the longest running game in Canadian Hockey League history in the first round of the 2017 WHL Playoffs when the Silvertips defeated the Victoria Royals in a broadcast that lasted over six hours. He’s proud to have broadcasted over 1000 career games in professional hockey on radio and television. In previous seasons he worked for teams such as the Stockton Thunder and Alaska Aces of the ECHL. He was the original voice of the Thunder, working as their club’s Director of Broadcasting and Media Relations from 2005-13, he also earned the league’s Media Relations Award of Excellence in 2009. During his time at the Aces in Alaska, he was honored by the Alaska Broadcasters Association for his work in play-by-play.
Armed with a deep love of hockey, Benton enjoys dedicating his time off the air towards driving the Silvertips franchise’s latest initiatives in media relations, digital media, broadcast administration and community outreach.
