About

Monica Puig is a distinguished former professional tennis player from Puerto Rico, renowned for her remarkable achievements on the international stage. Turning professional in 2010, Puig quickly made her mark by winning two WTA Tour singles titles and six ITF singles titles. Her career reached a pinnacle on September 26, 2016, when she achieved her highest singles ranking of world No. 27. Notably, Puig made history by becoming the first Puerto Rican athlete to win a gold medal at the Olympics, triumphing in the women’s singles event at the 2016 Rio Games, a feat that solidified her status as a trailblazer in Puerto Rican sports history.

Throughout her career, Puig showcased her talent by defeating several top-ten players, including the likes of Angelique Kerber and Garbiñe Muguruza. Her Olympic victory was not only a personal achievement but also a significant milestone for Latin American tennis, as she became the first unseeded female player to win the gold medal since tennis was reintroduced to the Olympics in 1988. Additionally, she earned a silver medal at the Pan American Games and was a Central American and Caribbean champion, further highlighting her competitive prowess.

Puig’s journey in tennis was marked by consistent growth and determination. She began her career in junior tournaments, where she demonstrated her potential by reaching finals and winning titles. Her breakthrough came in 2012 when she won her first $50k event in France, paving the way for her future successes on the WTA Tour. Over the years, she participated in numerous Grand Slam tournaments, consistently pushing her limits and striving for excellence.

After a successful career, Puig announced her retirement from professional tennis on June 13, 2022, due to the cumulative effects of injuries. Since then, she has embraced new challenges, including marathon running, and has taken on roles in sports commentary with ESPN and the Tennis Channel. Monica Puig’s legacy in tennis continues to inspire many, as she remains a prominent figure in the sports community, advocating for Puerto Rican athletes and sharing her journey with the world.
