Niall Ferguson

Niall Campbell Ferguson was born on April 18, 1964, in Glasgow, Scotland, to James Campbell Ferguson, a doctor, and Molly Archibald Hamilton, a physics teacher. He attended The Glasgow Academy and later studied at Magdalen College, Oxford, where he received a demyship, the highest scholarship. He graduated with a first-class honours degree in history in 1985 and was awarded a DPhil from the University of Oxford in 1989. His doctoral dissertation focused on “Business and Politics in the German Inflation: Hamburg 1914–1924.” Ferguson’s early academic career included roles as a research fellow at Christ’s College, Cambridge (1989), and as an official fellow and lecturer at Peterhouse, Cambridge (1990–1992).

Ferguson’s career progressed with significant appointments in leading academic institutions globally. He became a fellow and tutor in modern history at Jesus College, Oxford, and was named a professor of political and financial history there in 2000. In 2002, he moved to New York University Stern School of Business as the John Herzog Professor in Financial History. He then held dual professorships at Harvard University, serving as the Laurence A. Tisch Professor of History and the William Ziegler Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School from 2004. He also held the Philippe Roman Chair in history and international affairs at the London School of Economics from 2010 to 2011. Ferguson left Harvard in 2016 to become a Milbank Family Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University, where he had been an adjunct fellow since 2005. His contributions extend beyond academia, having founded Boxmind, an educational technology company, in 2000, and Chimerica Media Ltd., a television production company, in 2006. In 2021, he co-founded the University of Austin, aiming to address perceived issues in higher education.

His extensive bibliography includes notable works such as “The Pity of War” (1998), which challenged conventional narratives of World War I, and “The House of Rothschild” (1998), a two-volume history praised for its archival research. Other influential books include “The Cash Nexus” (2001), “Empire: How Britain Made the Modern World” (2003), “Colossus: The Rise and Fall of the American Empire” (2005), and “The Ascent of Money” (2008), which was adapted into an International Emmy-winning television series. Ferguson has presented numerous television documentaries, including “Empire” (2003), “American Colossus” (2004), “The War of the World” (2006), and “Civilization: Is the West History?” (2011). He was knighted by King Charles III in 2024 for his services to literature, recognizing his significant impact as a historian and author.
