About

Octavia Lenora Spencer was born on May 25, 1970, in Montgomery, Alabama. She is one of seven siblings and holds a BS in Liberal Arts from Auburn University, having majored in English with a double minor in journalism and theater. Her early career saw her working behind the scenes in casting before director Joel Schumacher offered her a small role in the 1996 film “A Time to Kill.” This marked her film debut, appearing alongside Sandra Bullock. Following this, she relocated to Los Angeles in 1997 on the advice of her friend, Tate Taylor. Before achieving widespread recognition, Spencer established herself with numerous brief but memorable appearances in both film and television. Her roles included parts in productions such as “Never Been Kissed,” “Big Momma’s House,” “Spider-Man,” and “Bad Santa.” She also made guest appearances on popular television series like “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,” “The Big Bang Theory,” and had a recurring role on “Mom.” In 2003, she made her stage debut in Los Angeles, in Del Shores’ play “The Trials and Tribulations of a Trailer Trash Housewife.” Her performance in the 2008 film “Seven Pounds” garnered critical attention.

Spencer’s breakthrough role came in 2011 as Minny Jackson in “The Help,” a performance that earned her significant accolades, including an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. This achievement marked a turning point in her career, leading to more prominent roles. She continued to receive critical acclaim and further Academy Award nominations for her work, becoming the first black actress to receive two consecutive Oscar nods. Her filmography since then includes “Fruitvale Station” (2013), “Snowpiercer” (2013), and voice work in Disney’s “Zootopia” (2016). Notable roles in 2016 included Dorothy Vaughan in “Hidden Figures,” which earned her another Oscar nomination, and Zelda Fuller in “The Shape of Water” (2017), leading to her third Oscar nomination. She has also taken on executive producer roles, notably for the Academy Award-winning film “Green Book” (2018), and starred in the dramatic series “Truth Be Told” (2019–2023) and the limited series “Self Made” (2020), portraying Madam C.J. Walker.
