About

Osborne Earl Smith, born on December 26, 1954, in Mobile, Alabama, became a prominent figure in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a shortstop. Nicknamed “The Wizard of Oz” for his exceptional defensive prowess, Smith began his professional career after being drafted by the San Diego Padres in 1977, having played baseball at California Polytechnic State University. He quickly gained recognition for his acrobatic fielding, marking his MLB debut in 1978. Smith earned his first Gold Glove Award in 1980, initiating a streak of 13 consecutive wins, an unmatched record for a shortstop. His early career with the Padres also saw his first All-Star Game appearance in 1981.

In 1982, Smith was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals, where his career continued to flourish. He was a key player in the Cardinals’ 1982 World Series victory and later achieved national recognition for his game-winning home run during Game 5 of the 1985 National League Championship Series. Despite a significant rotator cuff injury in 1985, he managed to maintain high performance, earning the Silver Slugger Award in 1987 for his offensive contributions. Smith continued to be a consistent All-Star and Gold Glove winner, with his career spanning until 1996. After retiring, his uniform number 1 was officially retired by the Cardinals, recognizing his significant impact on the team and the sport.

Beyond his playing days, Smith has remained involved in baseball and community work. He served as a host for “This Week in Baseball” and as a color commentator for Cardinals games. His dedication to philanthropy was recognized with the 1994 Branch Rickey Award and the 1995 Roberto Clemente Award. In 2002, Smith was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame on his first ballot, celebrating his remarkable contributions to baseball. He also actively supports youth sports and charitable initiatives, including involvement with the Gateway PGA REACH Foundation, for which he received the Old Tom Morris Award in 2025.
