Luis Severino was born on February 20, 1994, in Sabana de la Mar, Dominican Republic. He began his professional baseball journey by signing with the New York Yankees as an international free agent on December 26, 2011. Initially, he made his professional debut for the Dominican Summer League Yankees, where he recorded a 4–2 win–loss record with a 1.68 earned run average (ERA) across 14 starts. His early career saw him progress quickly through the minor league system, playing for the Charleston RiverDogs, Tampa Yankees, and Trenton Thunder, showcasing his talent and building a strong foundation for his future in MLB.
Severino made his MLB debut on August 5, 2015, with the New York Yankees, becoming the youngest pitcher to start a game in the 2015 MLB season. Following a challenging 2016 season, he emerged as a top pitcher in 2017, earning his first American League All-Star selection and finishing third in the Cy Young Award voting. He continued his strong performance in 2018, securing another All-Star selection. Throughout his career, Severino has logged significant innings and strikeouts, demonstrating a consistent ability to perform at a high level when healthy.
His career has been marked by both significant achievements and periods of injury. After signing a four-year contract extension with the Yankees in 2019, he faced multiple setbacks, including rotator cuff inflammation and Tommy John surgery in 2020 which caused him to miss significant playing time. Despite these challenges, Severino has shown remarkable persistence, returning to pitch effectively for the Yankees, then with the New York Mets in 2024 where he recorded a complete game shutout, and currently with the Athletics since 2025 where he signed a club-record contract. Off the field, Luis and his wife, Rosmaly, founded the Luis & Rosmaly Severino Foundation in 2018, focusing on educational and technological development for teenagers and improving community welfare.
