About

Paul Graham was born on November 13, 1964, in Weymouth, Dorset, England. His family moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1968, where he developed an early interest in computer programming during high school. He pursued higher education at Cornell University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy in 1986. Following this, he attended Harvard University, where he completed a Master of Science in 1988 and a Doctor of Philosophy in computer science in 1990. During his academic career, Graham also studied fine arts and painting at the Rhode Island School of Design and the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence. These diverse academic pursuits provided him with a broad perspective that influenced his later work in both technology and writing.

In 1996, Graham co-founded Viaweb with Robert Morris and Trevor Blackwell. Viaweb developed what they believed to be the first application service provider, offering software that allowed users to create their own online stores. The software was largely developed using Common Lisp, a programming language that Graham had significant expertise in. This venture proved successful, and in the summer of 1998, Viaweb was acquired by Yahoo! for $49.6 million in stock, subsequently becoming Yahoo! Store. This acquisition marked a significant milestone in Graham’s career, establishing him as a successful entrepreneur in the technology industry. He later gained recognition for his essays on technology and startups, published on his personal website and collected in his book, “Hackers & Painters.”

Building on his entrepreneurial experience and insights, Graham co-founded Y Combinator in 2005 with Robert Morris, Jessica Livingston, and Trevor Blackwell. Y Combinator was established to provide seed funding and mentorship to early-stage startups, particularly those led by young, technically-focused founders. Under his leadership, Y Combinator grew into a prominent startup accelerator, investing in over 1300 companies, including influential platforms such as Reddit, Twitch, Dropbox, Airbnb, and Stripe. In 2014, Graham transitioned from his day-to-day role at Y Combinator, though he continued to influence the startup ecosystem through his writings and new projects, such as the development of the Lisp dialect Arc and later Bel. His contributions have significantly shaped the modern startup landscape and the discourse around entrepreneurship and technology.
