About

Paul Stephen Rudd was born on April 6, 1969, in Passaic, New Jersey. His parents, Michael and Gloria, were both from Jewish families in the London area, U.K. Due to his father’s airline job at TWA, Paul traveled with his family during his early years. The family eventually settled in Overland Park, Kansas, where his mother worked as a sales manager for TV station KSMO-TV. Paul attended Broadmoor Junior High and Shawnee Mission West High School, graduating in 1987. He served as Student Body President during his time there. He pursued higher education at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, majoring in theater. Further enhancing his acting skills, he graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts-West in Los Angeles and completed a three-month intensive workshop under Michael Kahn at the British Drama Academy at Oxford University in Britain. Rudd was involved in producing the Globe Theater’s production of Howard Brenton’s “Bloody Poetry,” where he also starred as Percy Bysshe Shelley.

Rudd’s career in film and television began with an acting debut in 1991, starring in a commercial for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. He gained early recognition with a recurring role on the television drama “Sisters” as Kirby Quimby Philby starting in 1992. In 1995, he appeared in the film “Clueless,” which became a notable project. This was followed by supporting roles in films like “Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers” (1995), “William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet” (1996), and “The Object of My Affection” (1998). In 2002, he joined the cast of the popular sitcom “Friends” as Mike Hannigan. A significant turning point in his career came in 2004 when he began collaborating with director/producer Judd Apatow, appearing in films such as “Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy” (2004), “The 40-Year-Old Virgin” (2005), and “Knocked Up” (2007). He also diversified his work by narrating the 2007 edition of “Hard Knocks,” a sports documentary series focusing on the Kansas City Chiefs.

His career experienced a notable progression with his involvement in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where he was cast as Scott Lang/Ant-Man in the film “Ant-Man” (2015). He reprised this role in “Captain America: Civil War” (2016), “Ant-Man and the Wasp” (2018), “Avengers: Endgame” (2019), and “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” (2023). In 2019, Rudd starred in the Netflix comedy series “Living with Yourself,” also serving as executive producer. He received two nominations at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards for his role in “Only Murders in the Building” (2023–2024) and for narrating the National Geographic documentary series “Secrets of the Octopus.” Beyond his screen work, Rudd has maintained a presence in theatre, performing in Broadway productions like “The Last Night of Ballyhoo” (1997) and “Three Days of Rain” (2006). In 2015, he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Since 2014, he has been a co-owner of Samuel’s Sweet Shop, a candy store in Rhinebeck, New York.
