John Slattery

Born on August 13, 1962, in Boston, Massachusetts, John M. Slattery Jr. began his acting journey with a television debut in the 1988 series “The Dirty Dozen.” From the outset, Slattery demonstrated a consistent work ethic and a knack for memorable character portrayals. His early television career included roles in series such as “Under Cover,” “Homefront,” “Maggie,” and “Feds.” He also appeared in mini-series like “A Woman of Independent Means” (1995) alongside Sally Field, and in “From the Earth to the Moon” (1998), where he played Walter Mondale. These foundational experiences laid the groundwork for his future career in diverse roles.

Slattery established himself as a prominent character actor through recurring roles in several popular television shows. He appeared as Will Truman’s brother Sam in “Will & Grace,” played Amy’s estranged husband in “Judging Amy,” and portrayed a politician in “Sex and the City.” In 2001, his role as the high school principal Dennis Martino in NBC’s comedy-drama “Ed” brought him considerable recognition. Beyond television, Slattery maintained a robust theatre career, starting with “The Lisbon Traviata” in 1989. He collaborated with playwright Richard Greenberg on several productions and made his Broadway debut in Neil Simon’s “Laughter on the 23rd Floor” in 1993, starring opposite Nathan Lane. His return to theatre in 2000 saw him in a revival of Harold Pinter’s “Betrayal.”

His film career commenced with a small part in “City Hall” (1996), followed by appearances in movies such as “Eraser” (1996), “Traffic” (2000), and “Bad Company” (2002). Slattery gained significant attention for his role as Roger Sterling in the critically acclaimed AMC series “Mad Men” (2007–2015), which earned him four Primetime Emmy Award nominations. He is also known for portraying Howard Stark in the Marvel Cinematic Universe films, including “Iron Man 2” (2010), “Ant-Man” (2015), “Captain America: Civil War” (2016), and “Avengers: Endgame” (2019). Slattery has also ventured into directing, making his feature film directorial debut with “God’s Pocket” (2014) and directing alongside producing “Maggie Moore(s)” (2023). He is set to appear as Colonel Burton C. Andrus in the upcoming 2025 film “Nuremberg.”
