Paulo Henrique Costa was born on April 21, 1991, in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil. His early life included playing football and training in Muay Thai from age nine, which helped him develop discipline. After the passing of his father when he was 17, Costa initially stepped away from martial arts but later returned to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under the guidance of his older brother, Carlos Costa, who also serves as one of his coaches. To support his family during this period, Costa worked in real estate and as an IT teacher, teaching Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.
Costa began his professional mixed martial arts career in February 2012 in Brazil. Over the next five years, he achieved an undefeated record of 8-0, with seven victories by knockout and one by submission. This impressive start led to his participation in The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil 3, where he won his elimination round fight by submission before losing in the quarterfinals via split decision. These early experiences laid the groundwork for his eventual entry into the Ultimate Fighting Championship, demonstrating his potential and aggressive combat style.
He made his UFC debut on March 11, 2017, at UFC Fight Night 106, where he secured a TKO victory in the first round against Garreth McLellan, earning his first Performance of the Night award. Costa continued his winning streak with notable TKO victories over Oluwale Bamgbose at UFC 212 in 2017 and former champion Johny Hendricks at UFC 217 in the same year. His career progression saw him secure his second Performance of the Night award with a TKO win over Uriah Hall at UFC 226 in 2018. A significant career turning point came with his unanimous decision victory over Yoel Romero at UFC 241 in 2019, which earned him the Fight of the Night award. In 2020, Costa vied for the UFC Middleweight Championship against Israel Adesanya at UFC 253, marking his first professional loss. He later secured another Fight of the Night award with a unanimous decision win over Luke Rockhold at UFC 278 in 2022, and recently defeated Roman Kopylov via unanimous decision at UFC 318 in 2025. As of August 2025, he is ranked #13 in the UFC middleweight rankings.
